Myths And Facts About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in misconceptions. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t regard them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Some of the popular misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very easy to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others usually refuse to acknowledge it. They hold that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely conscious of the goings on around him. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of complete relaxation characterized by a rise in levels of concentration, and this heightened sensitivity helps the subject to absorb new inputs with considerable ease.

Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. Researchers have come up with this low percentage because they have used the same hypnosis technique on all people without considering their individual traits. People differ in their characters and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis methods to fit the temperaments of different people.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. However, meditation is essentially a personal experience that has got no involvement of communication, whereas communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, whereas the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.

Another myth is that physical and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot transform the body in abnormal ways. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

If a person falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
